3FL History
Since we have now been around for over 2 years (began January 2004) and after speaking with a lot of my own members and having them ask me questions about the 3FL, "Who started it", "Who runs it", "How long has it been around", etc., etc. I have decided to compose a 3FL history post for the many new teams and players, so they can read it and see where we started and where we have come from. Some information came from memory while other information was pulled from original emails I still have when we were getting this thing together. The teams and their leaders have also provided information as it pertains to them, using thoughts, stories and memories for a comprehensive look at how this thing got started and how it has progressed in our two plus years of existence.
Most of the teams present here in the 3FL League have played in other BF42 online leagues in the past (CAL, TWL or OGL to name a few) and how shall I say, “Have had less than a favorable experience to put it kindly”. Many who played didn’t stand a chance against these so called “amateur” teams, mainly because they all had this silly thing going called a “real life”. We did not have time to practice for hours an hours a week to get good enough to compete against teams in these leagues who did practice, scrim and play for hours on end. On top of getting “owned” every week, we generally had to listen to the invariable trash talking about “what a great team we were” afterwards, or read about it in the forums, which made the defeat and experience all the more miserable. While playing in the CAL league, we used to scrim against some other teams we knew to try and get ready for the CAL competition (yeah right). Two of the teams that |oWs| scrimmed were 30+, which |oWs| broke off from in order to form their own team, mainly for the sole reason that we had some mature friends who were under 30 that we wanted to add to the group (oWs is now officially 21 and over). We also scrimmed against the Unmanageables, who we got to know from Bonedaddy, whom was a very good player that |oWs| tried to recruit but ended up going back to his old friends and formed the Unmanageables and we stayed in touch with them on their server and ours.
So one day after another humiliating loss in CAL where I don’t think we even got out of our base, most of the |oWs| players while speaking on Ventrilo (Vinny) were fed up and ready to quit the league, someone, (if my memory is good Sgt. Slaughter) said, “I have much more fun scrimming the Unmanageables and 30+ during the week than I do playing in these CAL matches, at least we have a chance and don’t have to listen to the crap afterwards”. I agreed and said, “Yep, I wish we could just play them every week and just skip the match, because it is a lot more FUN playing a bunch of mature guys, I look forward to our scrims more than I do the actual matches”. *BING* That annoying sound would be the proverbial light bulb going off in my head. I casually mentioned to everyone on Vinny, “Why don’t I check with Bonedaddy (Ums) and Chinook (30+) the leaders of our friendly scrims and see if we can just play them for fun and get out of this league”. We didn’t even need a vote, it was overwhelming, “Yeah, that would be sweet, check with them”!
So I got in contact with Bonedaddy and RedMonkey from the Ums and 30+ Chinook and they were very enthusiastic about the idea and mentioned that they might know some other clans that would be interested. “Hmmmm….really I thought!? Maybe we could actually start our own little fun league, kinda like a softball league, where you get together, have fun with the guys and then have a beer afterwards with each other and laugh about our athletic skills or lack there of, all in good fun of course”. They were all for it and said they would check with some teams and get back to me.
At about this time we had recently played an actual mature team in the CAL league where oWs achieved their one and only victory, albeit the biggest nail biter in history. I think we won by one ticket when our pilot bailed out and killed the last troop while falling from the sky. We actually received congrats and good games from this team….so naturally we immediately wondered….. what the hell is wrong with these guys!? Just kidding, actually we decided to stay in touch with them and continued to scrim them for fun in getting ready for CAL. This team was known as the GFL and although they have went through many changes over the couple of years; they still are original members of the league and are now known as The Last Stand or TLS.
Here is the original email sent out to prospective teams on 1-7-04:

Hi guys, Ozzy here from the Old Warriors Society |oWs| group. Our group and several other groups (clans) have come up with an idea of starting an informal BF42 league consisting of mature, good sportsmanship, team playing scrimmage league. In this scrimmage type league, we would play our "brother" clans in some non-serious, but yet competitive matches. Just seeing what everyone thinks, before we go about getting it organized. Most of our groups consist of “older”, mature members, who have real lives and not a ton of time to devote to practices and scrims and such, but still like to compete on equal terms. With our limited amount of playing and practice time, we are obviously never going to be serious competitors in the CAL or TWA leagues, against dedicated young players who play this game for hours upon the day. We would like to contact a lot of the clans we generally play with and see what the interest would be in running an informal league. We could set up a small schedule based on the amount of teams, then, have a playoff, etc. We would just play for bragging rights in a league where everyone is pretty evenly matched skill wise, along with maturity wise. This would not prevent teams who still actually want to participate in an organized league, just help get them ready for the matches.
So if this sounds interesting to you and your group, let me know and we will then iron out the details if there is enough interest. We may try and have an informal introductory meeting on voice chat (we use Ventrilo) Thursday (1-8-04) around 9 EST to lay the groundwork. All are invited; just let me know by email (

) if you would like to attend. Even if you can’t, just at least let me know if you are interested and would like further details after the meeting.
Thanks for your time,
|oWs| Ozzy

Semtek here from the GFL, were interested as I'm sure you figured. I'll stop by your ventrilo server at 9pm and help you iron it out if you want, maybe I will drag along my CO. I just need the IP address for the server. Is it an open bar tonight
Chinook forwarded the above email to the MoF clan who immediately expressed interest and joined us, giving us 5 teams:

I talked it over with my clan and we are in...let us know what to do
and where to sign up. We are looking forward to some no hassle competition.....

Leviathan
MoF has also went through some major changes, but are still very active in the league, and are now known as Reverence.
Not completely sure how we met the next original team, FSSF (First Special Service Force) but they were invited and immediately joined up too, giving us 6 teams.
We invited several other clans, Ir8 (I remember Eight Tracks), OTH (Over the Hill), Cofr (Crusty Old Fossil Rockers), (as you can see we were going for the older, more mature players) – lol as well as the MoG (Men of God) and the Lords (former oWs) who didn’t join initially but did in a future season. But for whatever reason, these teams did not sign up with us. So we decided to start the first season with 6 teams:
30+, Unmanageables, FSSF, MoF (now Reverence), GFL (now TLS) and |oWs|.
We then had a meeting with these 6 teams and came up with an outline and “rules” for the league; this was the original post about the league after having the meeting and deciding we were going to have the league:

The Old Warriors Society and several other fellow groups (clans) have come up with an idea of starting an informal BF42 league consisting of mature, good sportsmanship, team playing scrimmage league. Getting started:
We are currently looking to start this league on Sunday February 8th, 2004 at 9:00 EST. All matches will be scheduled for the next 10 Sundays. We will also try and have a preseason game on Sunday January 25th to introduce everyone and to get any bugs, questions or problems worked out before we start officially. (We will skip Sunday Feb. 1 since it is Superbowl Sunday). It should also allow us a little more time to obtain a few more teams and to get the league further organized.
Basic Rules:
Once again, this is going to be an informal scrimmage type league, so there shouldn’t be any major rules we need to follow such as like in CAL or whatever. This is what we have so far and these are open to change if necessary:
•Winner of matches will be the best, 2 out of 3. In the event of a tie, one additional round (overtime) will be played. The team that has the highest ticket differential (most tickets) after the normal two rounds have been played will have their choice of either which side to play in overtime.
•The Default time for all matches to be played is Sunday, at 9:00pm EST. However, the match date and time can be changed if both teams agree upon the matter.
•Matches are to be played 12 vs. 12 unless the participating clans both agree on a separate number.
•View distance for tags and ticket ratio will be determined later.
•Each game of the match will have a 30 minute time limit and will have a 30 second start time delay to insure all players are in and ready at the same time.
•Home team will host the match on their server and get to pick which side to play first.
•Only screenshots needed will be the results of each game, each team will take shots.
•Winning team will submit results to

for him to post. No need to send screenshots unless requested, just keep in case of a problem.
Extra fun stuff:
•Along with the results, I would like the winning team captain to submit one or two players from his team as the “Match MVP” for props and a short right up in the forums in the results area. Don’t just choose the high scorers of the match necessarily, but explain why this person was chosen and what they did exceptionally to help your team to victory! Should be fun.
•Also, if you want to submit (either winning or losing team) something funny or crazy that happened in the match, include a brief write up and we will post it for some good laughs. Be kind!
Not knowing if this league would get off the ground or not, we decided to just create a section on the oWs forums so that we would have a place where we could all communicate and post rules, schedules, server configs and of course talk trash! We were trying to decide on a name for the league when one of our leaders, eiEi_arRrgH who was putting this together on our website came up with a simple name. Since we were “fraggin each other just for fun”, he put up the title, “Frag for Fun League”, which was supposed to be just temporary until we could come up with a better name, but no better name was ever submitted, so it stuck, and of course was then shortened to the 3FL!
